Graduated in Electrical Engineering from the University of Aberdeen.  Final year dissertation "An investigation into the commutation overvoltages found on offshore oil platforms"

Started research into characteristics of large drives on marine and offshore power systems.

1989 - Northern Ireland Electricity Price, best presentation at 24th Universities Power Engineering Conference.

Principal investigator: Science and Engineering Research Council /Marine Technology Directorate/Ministry of Defence project “Integrated Electo-Mechanical Modelling of Marine Cycloconverter Propulsion Systems.”

Ph.D.

Graduated with a doctorate degree from the University of Aberdeen.  Dissertation "CAD Simulation of drive converters on isolated marine power systems"

Lecturer in Power Systems Engineering

Director of Studies for B.Eng. degree in Electrical Engineering. Research student supervision.

Principal investigator: EPSRC/MTD project An Appraisal of the Usefulness of Combined ac and dc Transmission in the Development of Offshore Oil and Gas Fields.  This involved computer as well as physical modelling of both ac and dc interconnections. The aim of the project was to increase the inter-connectivity of the electrical power system whilst avoiding instabilities.

1999 - Institute of Marine Engineers, Stanley Gray Award – Offshore Technology

Senior Electrical Engineer 

Joined power systems analysis team and established electromagnetic transient modelling as a core analysis activity.  Led specialist team of four analysis engineers specialising in EMT studies.  Completed wide range of power system studies for offshore, industrial, distribution, and utiility networks  using both conventional RMS and EMT study tools.

2006 - Ralph H Lee Prize Paper Award. Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Department of the IEEE Industry Applications Society. 

2007 - Power Systems Engineering Committee Prize Paper Award. Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Department of the IEEE Industry Applications Society.

2007 - Fellow of the Higher Education Academy

2007 - Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

2008 - Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers

2008 - Milne Award for Innovation – Mott MacDonald Group Award,

2011 - Elected Member of Council of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (to 2014).

2012 - Member of team that received the Climate Change Business Journals (CCBJ) 2012 Business Achievement Award in the category Project Merit: Transmission for Renewable Integration.

Established K S Power Consulting Limited, to provide independent specialist services related to the analysis, modelling, design, and operation of electrical power systems.

Services include: power system calculation review for design, system upgrades, and incident investigation, technology assessments, literature review, electrical concept selection, numerical methods for power system analysis, electromagnetic transient analysis using industry standard tools, power system transient and harmonic measurements.
